What started as taking snapshots for fighters developed into an examination of relationships and interactions in a space where sanctioned and regulated conflict occurs.  Becky Olstad’s photographic exhibition documents the community of the Circle of Discipline (COD), a boxing center located on Lake Street in Minneapolis.  COD fosters the development of high-risk youth and young adults by nurturing their emotional, physical and mental health primarily through the sport of boxing.
Becky Olstad is a photographer and educator based in Minneapolis, MN.  She received her BA from the University of Minnesota and her MS in photojournalism from Boston University.  Prior to her work as an educator at both the Art Institutes International Minnesota and Minneapolis Community and Technical College, Olstad worked as a freelance photographer producing work for editorial and advertising clients in both the national and local markets.  Olstad has received an Artist Initiative Grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board and was awarded the Emerging Documentary Photographer Fellowship from OverExposure.
This exhibition is made possible by a grant from OverExposure with funds appropriated by the McKnight Foundation.  OverExposure is a nonprofit organization that creates documentary photography projects that engage the community.
